The deal would include $300 billion in new funds for small businesses to pay their employees, as well as $75 billion for hospitals, Mnuchin said.

“That was my idea,” Mnuchin said of including Trump’s name. “He is the president, and I think it’s a terrific symbol to the American public.”

“When we end the shutdown, the virus is going to spread faster,” Kennedy acknowledged. “That’s just a fact. And the American people understand that.”

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, faces a tough reelection battle in the fall and has criticized Trump on a number of occasions.

Pelosi also said Trump cost lives by his initial response to the crisis and called for “an after-action review” of his handling of the outbreak.

Americans are divided on President Trump’s response to the coronavirus outbreak, polls have found. Approval and disapproval fell along party lines.

“I can’t jump in front of the microphone and push him down. OK, he said it. Let’s try and get it corrected for the next time,” Anthony Fauci said.
